Golf is one of the most difficult recreational sports to play. Many methods of teaching pride themselves on the simplest method and I have become a victim of this. There is no "simple swing" in golf. Ben Hogan's 5 Lessons is a wonderful classic from the Silver Age of Golf. However, if you are looking for solid instruction with few gimmicks, this is the one. This book is written by a true master of the teaching the game. He is articulate, although oftentimes verbose. He understands every aspect of the full swing and breaks down the swing into 8 steps. He outlines the pitfalls at each stage. To simplify the swing, he has recommended 1st learning a 4 step process at steps 2,4,6 and 8. He covers the misconceptions of the swing and the ideals of a solid fundamental swing through his 20 Fundamentals and 25 "antifundamentals". A chapter on the "Death Moves" identify and help correct the extreme swing errors. Every aspect of the golf swing from setup, grip, alignment, stance, grip pressure, ball position, swinging the club on plane and pre-shot routine are covered. He outlines the strategies to manage the course, pick a good instructor, and methods of practice. The art of driving the ball with authority is invaluable. This book has so many pearls of wisdom that it is invaluable. A special section covers the swing for women and junior golfers is helpful. The limitations of this book is the lack of illustrations on the drills that he describes. It should be coordinated with watching the associated video to truly benefit from this system. Jim McLean: The 8-Step Swing - DVD The 8-Step Swing by Jim McLean No shortcuts in golf exist. This book covers the fundamentals in every way to ensure success of the full swing. If this were all inclusive (i.e. had more illustrations), this would rate 5 stars. I highly recommend this book for the beginner and the seasoned golfer.

Great compliment to the video of the same title. McLean breaks the golf swing down to its basics and provides a nice illustration of the parts of the swing. Approach is simple enough for even a casual reader, but delves into great detail for a person of keen interest. Covers drills and procedures for improvement at every step, and is a great reference for a golfer of any skill level. I think this is a classic work, and recommend it to any golfer.

This is a fairly easily assembled net structure that can handle drives, high-lofted shots and chips without any difficulty. The net relies on plastic clips fastened onto the frame in order to bend it into the appropriate shape. Some of my clips have already moved slightly, causing the shape to change a little but a bit of further, reluctant, adjustment has fixed that. The net takes approximately 15 minutes to set up, from taking the box out to putting the last clip on and fixing the pegs in the ground. It takes about 10 minutes to take down and put away. It's a big net and it requires a fair bit of space to put together so make sure it will fit in the space that you have. It's a little awkward to put up the first time (you need to put the metal poles together in a circle which requires a bit of effort, and then connect clips from one side to the other) but you get used to it fairly quickly. Once it's set up you're good to go as soon as you put a weight (not provided) in the little blue bag at the base of the net. Then you stand a comfortable distance from the net and hit away. The cross section of straps at the back also makes an impromptu chipping basket if you're so inclined. Any chips that don't go in there I know I've topped. All in all a good product with quality netting that I don't expect to tear anytime in the near future. I'm not worried about the plastic clips that hold the net on either as it's not really necessary for every clip to be in place for the net to work - so if one or two of them break due to my awesome slice or insane power hook, it won't be the end of the world. Customer Review: Not so "insta(nt)"
The net was well made and priced low but took almost 10 minutes to set up. I had a hard time keeping it standing, the guy lines and stakes were very necessary but they give no specific directions on where & how to attach them. To store it required that it be completely dismantled. I purchased the Instant Range Net to replace it, and it truly is Instant. Much more stable and instantly sets up. The Insta-net is not what its name implies.

Right now, I'd rank this third among the best sports books I've ever read, and I've enjoyed quite a few of them over the years. I loved this book because it got me so involved with the main characters. Author Mark Frost really makes you care about Francis Ouimet, his 10-year-old caddy Eddie Lowery and chief golf opponent Harry Vardon. All of them are fantastically interesting people and Frost is like a great artist painting their portraits. The story is written so well that even though I knew what happened in the climactic 1913 U.S. Open tournament, I will still a nervous wreck reading about it. That's the mark of good writer, to still make it fascinating and tense even when the reader knows the final result! Years after reading this, the exploits of three people mentioned above, and a few others, are still vividly in my mind. The human interest angles are what make this a great, great sports book. It's the same winning formula that me love Laura Hillenbrand's "Seabiscuit" and Jack Cavanaugh's "Tunney." Like those above, this is a book I would glady read a second time. It's filled with unforgettable moments and truly good people who transcend their sports accomplishments. Meanwhile, Frost has gone to write several other best-selling golf books but this first effort will tough to top.

My husband and I both golf and would like to get our children interested. This book was both creative and informative using proper golf language. The illustration were both fun and realistic to the game of golf. Our children loved chip and his adventure.
